Sensei Heather is the Head Instructor of the South Calgary (Wado Kai) Karate Club. She also serves as President of Karate Alberta and is the National Para Karate Coach for Karate Canada. Sensei Heather is a certified NCCP Competition Development Coach and Coach Developer. She is a two time recipient of the Petro Canada Leadership award (2019 & 2024) and numerous other awards.
Her karate journey began in 1986 at the University of Alberta Wado Kai Club, where she earned her Shodan in 1990. She went on to found the St. Albert Wado Kai Club and lead the Edmonton Riverbend Wado Kai Club before establishing the South Calgary club in 1994.She was awarded her Shichidan in 2020.
Sensei Heather has extensive international experience, having trained in Japan (1992–93, 2000, 2015) and Brazil (1998), and competed under Sensei Endo. She also represented the SWKKF National Team from 2002 to 2006, competing in Canada, the U.S., and Morocco. In addition, she has coached at 5 World Championships and 8 Continental Championships, helping athletes with disabilities achieve personal bests and numerous podium placements.
She served on SWKKF committees beginning in 2002 and on the Senate from 2013 to 2023. Currently she acts as the Executive Director and Treasurer of the South Calgary club.
Sensei Darren is the co founder of the South Calgary Karate Club. He began karate at the University Of Alberta Wado Kai club in 1989 and earned his Shodan in 1992. Sensei Darren co founded the St. Albert Wado club and taught at the Edmonton Riverbend club. He trained in Japan with Sensei Endo in 1992/93. In 1994 he co founded the South Calgary Wado Kai karate club. He trained in Brazil as a guest in 1998 and in Japan in 2000. Attended the WTKA International in Italy in 2011 and Scottish Open in 2014. Sensei Darren earned his Godan rank in 2012. Sensei Darren was mailed his Rokudan certificate in 2020.
Sensei Frank is a South Calgary black belt who began in 1998. He earned his Shodan in 2002, and his Yodan in 2018. Sensei Frank currently runs the WIC youth program and heads up the Shindo program for the club. Sensei Frank is also the President of the Board of Directors for the South Calgary club and a member of the SWKKF Shindo Committee. Sensei Frank earned his Yodan rank in Shindo in February 2019.
Sensei Ray is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2000. He earned his Shodan in 2004, and his Yodan in 2018. Sensei Ray currently helps runs the WIC youth program. He is an active member of the Shindo program and the SWKKF Shindo Committee. Sensei Ray earned his Yodan rank in Shindo in February 2019.
Sensei Tom is a South Calgary black belt who began in 1998. He earned his Shodan in 2007. He earned his Sandan in 2015. He is an active instructor with the youth programs. He is an active member of the Shindo program. Sensei Tom earned his Sandan rank in Shindo in February 2019.
Sensei John is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2001. He earned his Shodan in 2006. He earned his Sandan in 2016. He is an active instructor with the club.
Sensei Jonathan is a South Calgary black belt who began in 1995. He earned his Shodan in 2012 and his Sandan in 2019 . He is an active instructor with the youth programs.
Sensei Heather is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2008. She earned her Shodan in 2014, Nidan in 2017 and her Sandan in 2020. She is an active instructor with the youth programs. Sensei Heather and her family have relocated to their home province of Nova Scotia and runs the Para program for Karate Nova Scotia.
Sensei Dene is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2009. She earned her Shodan in 2014, Nidan in 2017 and her Sandan in 2020. She is an active instructor with the youth programs. Kumite Member of 2014-2016 Shintani Team and Karate Alberta team and participates in the Competitive Club. She competed in Japan and was the 2017 Gold medalist in the Masters division. She is a member of the South Calgary Board of Directors. Karate Alberta WKF Provincial official.
Sensei Natalie is a South Calgary black belt who began in 1996. She earned her Shodan in 2014 and her Sandan in 2021. Competed: WKF World Karate Championships in 2014 Bremen, Germany (participant), Silver medalist in 2016, Linz, Austria, Bronze medalist in 2018, Madrid, Spain. WKF Pan-American Championships in 2017 Silver medalist, Curacao, Silver medalist in 2018, Santiago, Chile. She has also competed in Japan, Ireland and the US. She is a member of the Shintani Team, Karate Alberta Team and a Para-Karate Canada Team.
Sensei Robin is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2005. She earned her Shodan in 2016, Nidan in 2019, and her Sandan in 2023. Shewas a member of the Shintani Team, Karate Alberta provincial Team and a Karate Canada Team member. She has competed in USA, Japan, Ireland, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile and Canada. She has medalled at various tournament.
Sensei Mandi is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2010. She earned her Shodan in 2016, Nidan in 2019 and her Sandan in 2023. She was a member of the Shintani Team and competed in Japan, she is also an assistant instructor with the youth program and a director of the club. She is also a Karate Alberta WKF Provincial official. Currently living and teaching Karate in Costa Rica.
Sensei Kevin is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2007. He earned his Shodan in 2018, Nidan in 2020, and his Sandan in 2023. He is an assistant instructor with all the programs.
Sensei James is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2001. He earned his Shodan in 2011 and his Nidan in 2021.
Sensei Darren is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2012. He earned his Shodan in 2018 and his Nidan in 2021. He is an assistant instructor with the youth program and active in Shindo.
Sensei Oleg is a South Calgary black belt who began in 2008. He earned his Shodan in 2018 and his Nidan in May 2022.
Sensei Lorraine is a South Calgary black belt who began with her children in 2009. She earned her Shodan in 2018. She is active in the Shindo program.
Sensei Kiley is a South Calgary black belt who began with his son in 2013. He earned his Shodan in 2019 and his Nidan in 2023. Sensei Kiley is active in Shindo and Bunkai and assists with the youth program when available.
Sensei David started karate in 2004 in the youth program. He earned his Shodan in 2013 and his Sandan in May 2025. Sensei David assists with the youth and adult programs.
Sensei Julio started karate in 2011. He earned his Shodan in 2020.
Sensei Corey started karate in 2014. He earned his Shodan in 2020 and his Nidan in 2025.
Sensei Adrienne started karate in 2016. She earned her Shodan in 2020 and her Nidan in 2024.
Sensei Sophie started karate in 2011 in the youth program. She earned her Shodan in 2021. Sophie is a member of the Karate Alberta Provincial Team, has competed at Karate Canada Nationals, qualified to compete at PKF in Brazil in 2018, competed at PKF in Ecuador and has won medals in the USA and Canada in both Kata and Kumite. Sensei Sophie also assists with the JFK program.
Sensei Garrett is a South Calgary black belt who began with his dad in 2013. He earned his Shodan in May 2022. Sensei Garrett is active in Shindo.
Sensei Seth started karate in the USA, he joined the South Calgary karate club in 2019 as a brown belt and in May 2024 earned his Shodan.
Sensei Sara is a South Calgary black belt who began with her family in 2014. She earned her Shodan in May 2023 and her Nidan in 2025. Sensei Sara is active in Shindo.
Sensei Lyle began karate at age 39; he earned his Shodan in 1994 and was graded to the rank of Yodan in 2007. Sensei Lyle was an integral part of the start up of the South Calgary Karate club in 1995 and pinnacle in the many successes of the club, the tournaments, the Black Belt gradings and most importantly the success of students who are now high belts and Black Belts. He has served as the only President of the South Calgary Board of Directors since 1995.
Sensei Reed started karate in Edmonton in 1982. He earned his Shodan in 1985 and his Godan in 1996. He has run numerous clubs in Northern AB and Southern AB. He currently trains periodically with the South Calgary Club.
Sensei Paul began karate in the Edmonton area in 1985. He earned his shodan in 1994. He is a past member of the SWKKF National Team. Sensei Paul earned his Yodan rank in 2019 and is currently living and running a club in Houston, TX.
